Leiden University was the first university to be established in the Netherlands. William of Orange gave Leiden Academia Lugduno Batava in 1575, it is said in recognition of the city’s courageous resistance against the seige by the Spanish invaders. Our motto is praesidium libertatis – bastion of freedom. One famous example of this commitment to freedom is the speech delivered by Professor Cleveringa in 1940 when he delivered a speech protesting against the threatened dismissal of his Jewish colleagues. 学生生活

校内有各种社交活动以活跃学生的课余生活。学生会在莱顿大学内有着举足轻重的地位。校内有6个学生协会、入会条件不同、它们的功能十分广泛：不仅为学生提供联谊机会，也提供学生参与戏剧、音乐、体育、歌舞等文娱活动的机会。莱顿大学留学生协会为留学生提供参与社交活动及文化活动机会。留学生还可以选择一位本地生作为生活指导，以便遇到困难时，能及时获得帮助。
